Charity Dodgeball Recap!

On November 13th, 2010, students from Georgetown gathered in teams to play dodgeball and raise money for ‘Nothing But Nets.’ ‘Nothing But Nets’ provides long-lasting nets for only $10 each to prevent malaria infections for those at risk in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The result was a fun afternoon filled with dodging, ducking, and donating. The champions of the tournament and the team with the best spirit won prizes, graciously donated by Chipotle and the Tombs. Each team also received a specialty vuvuzuela. Overall, hundreds of dollars were raised, and the event was a complete success.

Thanks to all of our participants and sponsors!

Join us for HGI’s 4th Annual Charity Dodgeball Tournament! Choose a team name and make a team with friends, coworkers, or student groups!

On Saturday November 13th, Georgetown University’s Hoyas Global Initiative is hosting its Fourth Annual Charity Dodgeball tournament at Yates Field House. This year the goal of the tournament is to raise awareness and funds to help combat the deadly disease of malaria. Malaria is one of the most preventable diseases, but sadly every 30 seconds a child dies from the disease. The World Health Organization states that last year there were 247 million cases of malaria and nearly one million deaths.
This year’s tournament theme will be ‘World Cup Dodgeball.’ Participants will compete against each other on teams with national themes. Prior to the tournament, HGI is selling vuvuzelas as a fundraiser and to advertise the event around campus. There will also be prizes available to participating teams. HGI looks forward to the tournament, when Georgetown students can come together to fundraise for an incredible cause. The $10 registration fee for competing exactly matches the $10 it takes to buy a net to prevent malaria infection through Nothing But Nets.

HGI’s 25 Days of Service AIDS Project- Damien Ministries

On Sunday, several members of the Hoyas Global Initiative and a representative from the International Relations Club traveled to volunteer with Damien Ministries. Damien Ministries provides a variety of services to support communities and individuals affected by AIDS.

The project was part of ’25 Days of Service’ at Georgetown. At Damien Ministries, we were tasked with doing community cleaning for the site as well as the block they ‘adopt.’ It was a beautiful autumn day and our project led to an interesting discussion about nonprofit work.

Many thanks go to Rashid from Damien Ministries, as well as all the participants!
